Federal Ministries: Own Ministry for Immigration? Criticism of the Green Plan

Nobody knows who will get Horst Seehofer’s post after the federal election. The debate about whether the Federal Ministry of the Interior should then have the same layout is already underway.

The Greens’ plan for an immigration ministry does not meet with approval from the other parties. So far, the Federal Ministry of the Interior has been responsible for everything that has to do with citizenship, asylum and immigration.

“It is right to strengthen the issue of integration in the future government,” said the domestic political spokesman for the Union parliamentary group, Mathias Middelberg, on Friday at the German press agency. However, creating a separate ministry for this task is a mistake. Rather, it would make sense to strengthen the competencies of the Federal Ministry of the Interior in this area, “for example through a stronger role in the subject of integration into the labor market”.

FDP boss Christian Lindner spoke out in favor of an integration ministry that is separate from the interior ministry, as is the case in North Rhine-Westphalia, which is governed by the CDU and FDP. «Germany has experienced immigration in the past. Often this happened in an uncontrolled manner. It is therefore not enough to speak vaguely of “participation policy”, as the Greens do, “said Lindner of the dpa. “We also have to clearly identify deficits in integration and work on solving them.” He sees this as a task for a ministry, which as a whole “should take care of the great task of integration”.

«We should formulate expectations of people who want to come to us. It must be clear under what conditions immigration to Germany is possible, ”said Lindner. “This also means that criminals and threats are consistently deported.” As an aging society, Germany depends on being attractive to bright minds and skilled workers from all over the world. In competition with other countries, care should be taken to ensure that social advancement can succeed and that joy in performance is worthwhile again.

From the point of view of the SPD domestic politician Uli Grötsch, the debate about the future tasks of individual ministries comes too early. He said: “You have to talk about the layout of departments in coalition negotiations.” The Greens should “distribute the bear’s fur only when it is killed”. Whether it made sense to place responsibility for the subject of building in the Ministry of the Interior will then have to be discussed again. The same applies to the question of whether the establishment of a “home” department in the Ministry of the Interior has proven successful or not.

From the AfD’s point of view, responsibility for migration should definitely remain with the Ministry of the Interior. “We are not allowed to promote illegal migration through an immigration ministry,” said the Bundestag member Martin Hess. The Ministry of the Interior must be expanded into a «deportation ministry».

The Federal Ministry of the Interior currently employs 2344 people. The homeland department has 140 employees, the migration department 110. The department dealing with construction and housing policy has 111 employees. Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) had announced that he would no longer seek political office after the federal election.
