War in Ukraine: Selenskyj fires secret service chief when he visits the front

For the first time since the beginning of the war, the Ukrainian President is traveling to the frontline in Kharkiv. There Selenskyj thanks the soldiers – and dismisses the local SBU boss: He “only thought of himself”.

After a visit to the front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the destruction in the city of Kharkiv as an example of Russia’s war of annihilation.

“Black, burned-out, half-ruined apartment buildings look east and north with their windows – to where the Russian artillery fired from,” he said in a video message. Russia can look into these houses like a mirror. “To see how much it has lost in these 95 days of the war against Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said.

The trip to Kharkiv was the first known visit by the Ukrainian president to the frontline since the start of the Russian war of aggression. During the visit, he fired the local head of the SBU, Zelenskyy said: “Because he hasn’t worked to protect the city since the first days of the war, he only thought of himself.” The case was handed over to the judiciary.

Zelenskyj: Russia has «lost its own future (…)»

Russia not only lost the battle for Kharkiv, but also for the capital Kyiv and northern Ukraine, the President said. «It has lost its own future and any cultural connection to the free world. They’re all burned.” A third of the area around Kharkiv is still occupied by Russian troops. “We have to liberate the entire area,” stressed Zelenskyy.

According to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, shortly after Zelenskyy’s visit became known, Kharkiv was fired upon by Russian troops. Part of the country’s second largest city was hit, Terekhov said, according to Ukrainian media, without giving details.

Video footage shared on Sunday on the president’s official Telegram channel showed Zelenskyy awarding soldiers, inspecting the destroyed infrastructure in Kharkiv, but also inspecting burnt-out military vehicles abandoned by the Russian army.

Selenskyj thanked the soldiers for their commitment. “I am immensely proud of our defenders. Every day they risk their lives to fight for the freedom of Ukraine», the President said.
