Australia’s still-governing party is reshuffling the cards: Peter Dutton succeeds Scott Morrison as chairman.
After the defeat in the general election, Australia’s Liberals are getting a new leader: the former defense minister and former interior minister Peter Dutton has been elected the new head of the conservative party and thus the country’s opposition leader.
Scott Morrison, who had been prime minister since 2018, resigned from the party leadership after the election disaster. Dutton, 51, who grew up in Brisbane and joined the Liberal Party of Australia as a teenager, has been a member of Parliament Down Under since 2001.
The parliamentary elections on May 21 were clearly won by Labor with lead candidate Anthony Albanese. The Social Democrats are back in government for the first time in almost ten years. However, it is still not clear whether Albanese can govern with an absolute majority or whether it will depend on the votes of other parties. Labor currently has 75 seats – just one seat short of an absolute majority. The results are still pending in three constituencies.
