Travelers in Belgium have to be prepared for cancellations and long waiting times – several unions have called for a strike.
Train services in Belgium were largely suspended late Monday evening due to a widespread public sector strike.
In large parts of the country, only around a quarter of the trains will run until the end of the strike on Tuesday evening, the Belga news agency reported. A replacement timetable is in effect. In the provinces of Liège, Luxembourg and Namur, there are no trains at all due to a lack of staff.
The ICE connections of Deutsche Bahn between Brussels and Frankfurt am Main are also canceled on Tuesday, according to Deutsche Bahn. In addition, a large part of the Thalys trains should be affected.
Several public sector unions had called for strikes today. The background is, among other things, general dissatisfaction with working conditions and demands for higher incomes. Restrictions are expected, among other things, in waste disposal, administration and education.
