Persecuted Afghans continue to be flown to Germany. The Taliban took power in the country last August. Since then there has been criticism of the government’s evacuation efforts in Germany.
The federal government continues to fly persecuted Afghans and former local Afghan workers and their families to Germany. On average, “about 200 Afghans per week are brought to Germany from Pakistan alone,” the Foreign Office told the newspapers of the Funke media group (Tuesday editions). People continue to travel regularly via Iran.
According to the Federal Foreign Office, German visa offices have been able to issue “more than 18,000 visas for local staff, particularly vulnerable people who have received approval from the federal government, and their family members” since the radical Islamic Taliban took power.
At the beginning of 2022, around 5,000 people without passports were supported within two months when leaving Afghanistan overland and then on their onward journey to Germany.

Since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan last August, there had been repeated sharp criticism of the German government’s evacuation efforts. The Bundeswehr had left behind thousands of local workers and people in need of protection during their hasty retreat.
