Long jumper Markus Rehm would also have liked to have attended the Olympic Games in Tokyo, because the 32-year-old has everything he needs in terms of sport. But he just has a prosthetic leg – and that’s why he was not admitted to the Olympics.
At the age of 14, Markus Rehm got caught in a ship’s propeller while wakeboarding. Since then he has been walking with a prosthetic leg. And not only that: Rehm competes as a long jumper at the Paralympic Games in London in 2012 and 2016 in Rio – and wins gold! The three-time gold medal winner wanted to compete in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 – but the World Athletics Federation thwarted the 32-year-old’s bill.
Reason: His prosthesis is a “mechanical aid”. In the podcast “Today important” he talks about his role, his goals and his dream: a competition for everyone. “We just have to think about establishing clear rules for the future on how we can achieve such inclusive competitions.” Markus Rehm also says: “My goal is simply to measure myself against the best athletes in the world, because in terms of technical aspects I simply belong to them.”
