35.2 cents cheaper on petrol. 16.7 cents less for diesel. The so-called tank discount is to come into force today. Doubts about it star-Reporter Rolf-Herbert Peters – and that the benefit is reflected in the end.
“I was shocked when I heard about the tank discount regulation. I would not have believed that a federal government in which the Greens are involved would allow something like this,” reports star-Reporter Rolf-Herbert Peters in the 286th episode of the morning podcast “important today”. Today, June 1, two important measures for consumers will come into force, which are part of the federal government’s relief package. The 9-euro ticket for local public transport is coming. And it’s already popular, with more than seven million units sold, according to the Association of German Transport Companies. In addition, the tank discount should reduce petrol and diesel by 35.2 and 16.7 cents per liter respectively. Both are valid from June to the end of August.
“The price level at the gas stations in Germany is determined by the mineral oil companies”
The entire relief package should cost around 17 billion euros, calculated Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner in March. The 9-euro ticket costs around 2.5 billion of this, and it is estimated that 3.15 billion euros are booked for the tank discount. That’s expensive, and also socially unjust, says star-Reporter Rolf-Herbert Peters: “Those who drive a lot and fast, use large cars and use a lot of fuel are relieved above average. And those who drive a small car and try to get to work benefit least from this benefit, paid out of their own taxes.” Peters also does not expect relief immediately after June 1: “Then the companies will say: Higher demand, higher prices. That’s a normal market mechanism.”
Is a tank discount even up to date in 2022?
Both measures were criticized beforehand. Local public transport companies criticized the feasibility and lack of predictability, the federal states were plagued by the financing of the 9-euro ticket. The fuel discount, on the other hand, is not socially balanced and is particularly fatal in relation to the climate crisis, says Rolf-Herbert Peters: “This reduction in fuel prices from the tax pot sends a completely wrong signal. It symbolizes a love for cars that almost reminds me a little of the Americans’ love of guns.”
