Lukashenko denies involvement in the death of the activist Schischow

“Who was he for Belarus or for me? … He meant nothing to us,” said Lukashenko at a press conference in Minsk on Monday.

Schischow, who lives in exile in Ukraine, was found hanged in a park in Kiev at the beginning of August after he had not returned from jogging. The opposition movement assumes a murder. The 26-year-old activist headed the organization “Belarusian House in Ukraine”, which helps Belarusians in exile to arrive in Ukraine.

Lukashenko spoke at a large-scale press conference in Minsk, which was broadcast live. The background of the appearance is the first anniversary of the controversial presidential election on August 9, 2020 and the start of mass protests. After the vote a year ago, Lukashenko was awarded the victory for the sixth time after more than 25 years in power. The democracy movement, on the other hand, sees the opposition leader Svetlana Tichanovskaya, who is now in exile, as the winner.
