The windfall for the Bundeswehr has been approved. But it will be years before Germany has a powerful army again.
More than 150 people have gathered in a parking lot at the Wismar shipyard site. The sun is shining, the brand new crane on the quay, which has never been used, is outlined against the blue sky. “It’s nice that we’ll all see each other again,” the head of the works council calls out to the crowd. IG Metall donated sausages and cola, although there is nothing to celebrate. Not yet.
Since the East German group MV Werften filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, there has been little opportunity for workers to meet. Some already have new jobs. But most remain in a transfer company. Your future? So far it has been uncertain to gloomy.
