Thyssenkrupp boss Martina Merz calls on the stern a “brave oomph” in terms of climate protection. The CEO of the energy company EnBW, Frank Mastiaux, believes that coal will be phased out by 2030. Politicians are too hesitant, both say.
Germany’s most powerful economic leader, Thyssenkrupp boss Martina Merz, calls for the sternInterview about stepping up the fight against climate change massively: “We have to get out of coal-fired power generation faster. We need a bold oomph,” she says. The steel manager also revealed: “I’ve been a Greenpeace member for 26 years, but I don’t abseil down to houses and don’t end up in football stadiums with banners.” Merz calls on the upcoming government to do everything possible to support the economy on its way to climate neutrality: “It’s no use putting up a pinwheel in Hintertupfingen while you miss the great transformation in the Ruhr area.” Thyssenkrupp itself wants to produce steel in a CO2-neutral manner by 2050 at the latest.
Frank Mastiaux, head of the energy company EnBW, which operates coal-fired power plants, says this stern: “Because of the stricter climate protection policy, it is clear that coal-fired power plants can no longer run until 2038.” Germany could get out of coal by 2030. The prerequisite is the expansion of gas-fired power plants that start up when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing, and which could later be operated with green hydrogen. “That can be solved very easily,” says Mastiaux. He also calls for “the expansion of renewable energies to be significantly accelerated, for example through less administration and more digitization in the approval process.” Today the construction of a wind turbine including the approval process takes 69 months.
The full interview with Martina Merz appears as part of the eight-part series “Neustart Deutschland – das sternElective Program “, to be found in the current edition of the stern (33/2021).
