Recently, more and more people came to Lithuania illegally from Belarus. That is why the government in Vilnius has started to build a border fence to stop this migration.
Because of the many illegal border crossings by migrants, the parliament of Lithuania voted in favor of building a border fence with Belarus.
In this way, the emergency situation in the Baltic country should be dealt with, announced the parliament on Wednesday night in the capital Vilnius. Work on the barbed wire barrier with a total length of 550 kilometers began a good month ago. “We have to have a strong, reliable border with Belarus as soon as possible,” said Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite, according to the BNS agency. The costs for the border installation are therefore put at around 150 million euros.
According to earlier information from the border guards, the barrier could be fully erected within a few months. The Belarusian ruler Alexander Lukashenko has openly threatened in the past to allow people from countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria to cross the border in response to the EU sanctions imposed on his country. There have recently been a particularly large number of illegal border crossings to Lithuania.
According to the border guards on Wednesday, around 70 people at the border with neighboring Belarus were asked to turn back within 24 hours. Three migrants were arrested. This year there have already been 4100 illegal border crossings from Belarus.
