The federal prosecutor’s office arrested an employee of the British embassy in Berlin on suspicion of espionage for Russia. He is said to have handed over documents to a Russian secret service for money, as the authority announced in Karlsruhe on Wednesday. Several media had reported about it.
Suspect reportedly sold documents for cash
David S. is “urgently suspected of having been working for a foreign secret service since November 2020 at the latest,” he said in a statement from the Attorney General.
On “at least one occasion” he passed on documents that he had obtained due to his position to a Russian intelligence service. In return, he received cash – so far it was unclear how high the amount was.
Searched home and workplace
The arrest on Tuesday in Potsdam was the result of joint investigations by German and British authorities. The investigators also searched the apartment and workplace of the arrested person. The London Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest of the 57-year-old Briton and cooperation with the German authorities.
The accused will be brought before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice on Wednesday, who will also decide on the execution of pre-trial detention.
