It is not yet clear whether decommissioned and reconditioned Marder tanks will be delivered to the Ukraine. But the first devices are ready to go.
The armaments group Rheinmetall has completed the modernization of the first Marder-type armored personnel carriers. “We are in the process of repairing 100 Marder armored personnel carriers, the first vehicles are already ready,” said Armin Papperger, CEO of the “Bild am Sonntag”.
With a view to a possible delivery to Ukraine, he added: “When and where the martens are delivered is the decision of the federal government.”
Ukraine wants Germany to have heavier weapons so that it can better equip itself to defend itself against Russia. Rheinmetall had offered to deliver the martens that had been decommissioned by the Bundeswehr and were to be reprocessed. The federal government has not yet decided according to the current public status. According to their plans, they should only be used for a ring exchange with NATO partners: countries like the Czech Republic and Greece would then receive them as compensation if they in turn delivered old Soviet tanks from their stocks to Ukraine.
