STORY: Farmer Vladimir’s village is located along the front line in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas. The ongoing fighting between the Russian and Ukrainian military is threatening and pervasive. 51-year-old Vladimir is concerned not only for his own well-being, but also for the condition of his fields. “I saw smoke and came to put out the fire, I was in my garden. I didn’t see the explosion itself.” Again and again the shelling, but also the launching of rockets, causes fields to catch fire and destroy parts of the harvest, the livelihood of the local farmers. Summer heat and drought increase the risk of fire. The burning fields are also a concern for local resident Lyuba, but she still doesn’t want to leave her home. “Where can I go? Who is waiting for me there? I live in my house. What happens is God’s will. Let the others go, they are young. I’m old, I’ve lived a very long time. It’s scary, but it is what it is.” The nearby city of Sievierodonetsk has now become the epicenter of the struggle for the Donbas region. Russian forces have taken most of the city, but Ukrainian troops remain in control of an industrial area and a chemical plant where hundreds of civilians have taken refuge. Russia says it has destroyed a large amount of weapons and military equipment in eastern Ukraine. This also included some armaments that had been delivered to Ukraine by the United States and countries of the European Union, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow announced.
