Podcast “Ukraine – The Situation”: Putin alone is not enough for Donbass, says military expert Masala

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will not be content with extending his sphere of power to the Donbass. The military expert Carlo Masala explains what could follow afterwards in the podcast “Ukraine – The Situation”.

According to military expert Carlo Masala, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be content with expanding his sphere of influence to include the Donbass, Crimea and a land connection between them. Masala said Tuesday im star– “Ukraine – the situation”, it’s about “controlling much, much more territory”. Putin wants to expand Russia’s sphere of influence. “The Donbass alone is not enough,” emphasized the politics professor at the Bundeswehr University in Munich.

Putin’s targets: Moldova, “possibly Georgia” and all of Ukraine

Specifically, he named Moldova, “possibly Georgia” and the entire Ukraine as targets for the Russian leadership. Masala sees chances for a ceasefire after Russia captures the Donbass – but any stop to the war that brings gains to Putin would only mean a pause and not the end of Russian ambitions.

With regard to the Baltic states – which belong to NATO – Masala expects a different strategy from Russia: “In order to achieve his goals in the Baltic states, he does not have to take military action. Hybrid warfare is enough to destabilize the three relatively small states. ” This means actions and measures below the threshold of an open and clear war.

Masala pointed out that Russian troops currently have clear advantages over their opponents in eastern Ukraine. “The Russians have far superior firepower,” he said. “Ukraine has relatively little to counter that.” But it is not the case that Ukraine has already lost. He again spoke out in favor of rapid deliveries of arms from the West to defend against the Russian invaders.
