Pandemic: Lauterbach: summer corona wave is here

According to Health Minister Karl Lauterbach, there will be no relaxation in the corona pandemic over the summer this year. There are several reasons for that.

In view of the increasing number of corona infections, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) has advised older people and people with previous illnesses to get a booster vaccination.

“Unfortunately, the announced summer wave has become reality. That means little relaxation for the next few weeks,” said Lauterbach of the “Rheinische Post”. The previously observed summer effect in the pandemic fizzled out this time. The reason for this is, among other things, that the currently circulating virus variant is very easily transferable. In addition, almost all precautionary measures have expired, Lauterbach explained to the newspaper.

“I therefore strongly recommend that older people and those who have previously been ill be vaccinated again.” This does not necessarily prevent an infection, but it does prevent serious illnesses.

Rising incidence

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the nationwide seven-day incidence on Tuesday morning was 447.3. This marked a notable jump from 331.8 the previous day. (previous week: 199.9; previous month: 477.0).

The chairman of the Virchowbund, Dirk Heinrich, also called for vaccination – especially those who have not yet been vaccinated. “Anyone who has not yet been vaccinated should be vaccinated now to avoid serious illness,” Heinrich told the “Rheinische Post”. The Virchowbund is an association that represents the interests of resident doctors. Heinrich also pointed out that older people or people who belong to a risk group should get a booster vaccination. He called on politicians to make preparations for the fall.
