Alexej Navalny reports from the new penal colony

There was great concern when it became known that Alexei Navalny had disappeared unnoticed from his former penal colony that morning. In the evening, the Kremlin critic reports from his new whereabouts – which is particularly notorious.

In the morning, Navalny’s spokeswoman had addressed the public with concern because the Putin critic had disappeared from his penal colony (the star reported). The imprisoned Kremlin critic has now announced via Instagram that he has been transferred to a penal colony near the city of Vladimir that is known for its harshness. “Hello everyone from the strict prison zone,” Navalny wrote on his Instagram channel on Wednesday. He was transferred to the IK-6 Melechowo penal camp the day before. He is currently in quarantine and “doesn’t have much to say”.

Before his transfer, Navalny was imprisoned in a penal colony in Pokrov, around 100 kilometers from Moscow. The Melekhovo penal camp is now 250 kilometers from the Russian capital and, according to Navalny’s supporters, is “one of the most frightening prisons in Russia”.

Alexej Navalny’s new whereabouts are notorious

In the past, numerous media reported about mistreatment of inmates of the penal camp. Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Jarmysch said in May that Melekhovo was “notorious for the fact that its inmates are tortured and killed”.

Navalny is the most prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and became known for exposing corruption cases in Russia. He was arrested at Moscow Airport on his return from Germany in January 2021. He had previously been treated in Berlin for poisoning he suffered in Russia with a neurotoxin from the Novichok group, for which he blames Putin.
