According to the United Nations, there are 121 million unintended pregnancies worldwide every year. More than 60 percent of these are aborted – almost half in unsafe conditions. At the World Population Conference in Cairo in 1994, 179 countries pledged to guarantee the future right to safe abortion.
Since then, 59 countries have extended abortion rights: A total ban has been lifted in 18 countries, including Chile, Somalia, Iran and Nepal. Since 1994, 15 other countries have generally permitted abortions at the request of women. This group includes Spain, Portugal, Switzerland and South Africa.
