Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi got an idea of the destruction caused by Russian attacks in the city of Irpin on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Irpin had been badly damaged during the first few weeks of the Russian advance. Regional Development Minister Oleksiy gave the heads of state an overview of the state of affairs. It was about the amount of destroyed buildings and infrastructure, the number of victims and the reconstruction. More than 100,000 single-family homes have been destroyed, and more than 12,000 multi-story apartment buildings like the one they face. Chernyshov had prepared photo and moving image documentation, including images of the Irpin Bridge, over which tens of thousands of people were evacuated. The minister spoke in English, Scholz, Macron and Draghi interposed questions in English, and Chernyshov answered. At each, the heads of state were accompanied by a large number of security officials. Many buildings are already being repaired, Chernyshov explained, the rubble is being cleared and the first construction work is being carried out. Windows, doors, facades, critical infrastructure such as electricity, water and gas must be secured. Winter is coming, the heating period in Ukraine will start on October 15th. French President Emmanuel Macron said “massacres and war crimes” were committed in Irpin. It is a heroic city marked by the stigmata of barbarism. Alongside Bucha, Irpin is one of the suburbs of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv where Russian soldiers are said to have committed atrocities against the civilian population.
