The controversial monument stands on community property at a point where many walkers and hikers pass. He himself has therefore already been placed in a right corner. He defends himself against this impression, said the Mayor of Imst, Stefan Weirather (VP), who announced that after the dismantling, the district capital would come to terms with the Nazi era.
The controversial memorial was erected in the 1970s by the Comradeship Association for three young men on the assumption that they were betrayed on May 19, 1945 and shot by US soldiers without trial.
Research in the Berlin Federal Archives recently revealed that the three soldiers were long-time members of the Waffen SS. The Totenkopf SS was a notorious division and was involved in war crimes.
