The population in Germany has increased by 82,000 within a year. The proportion of people with foreign citizenship increased slightly.
Immigration caused the population in Germany to grow slightly again last year.
At the end of 2021, a good 83.2 million people lived in Germany, 0.1 percent or 82,000 more than at the end of the previous year, according to the Federal Statistical Office based on the population update.
The development is mainly due to an increase in net immigration, which according to preliminary results grew to 317,000 people last year, after 220,000 in the previous year. This means that net immigration has almost reached the level before the outbreak of the corona pandemic (2019: 327,000). At the same time, 228,000 more deaths than births were counted in Germany. The excess of deaths rose again – in the previous year 212,000 more people died than were born.
At the end of 2021, 72.3 million people with German citizenship and 10.9 million with foreign citizenship lived in Germany. That was 308,000 more people with foreign citizenship than in the previous year and at the same time 226,000 fewer people with German citizenship. The proportion of foreigners in the total population thus increased in comparison to the previous year from 12.7 to 13.1 percent.
