Lithuanian foreign minister: “Western hesitation allows Russia to win”

Gabrielius Landsbergis, Foreign Minister of Lithuania, calls for the stationing of thousands of Bundeswehr soldiers in the Baltic States. His country fears becoming a Russian target itself.

“Russia perceives the West as weak. That’s dangerous,” says Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, urging the major industrial nations to finally start supplying more heavy weapons to Ukraine. States like the USA or Germany have it in their hands whether Russia’s war of aggression is successful or not. “Western hesitancy allows Russia to win. It seems to me that a lot of people are not really clear about that,” says Landsbergis in an interview with the star (read the full interview with stern+ here).

The Foreign Minister calls for a new international security order to contain authoritarian regimes within the framework of the G7. “I have little hope in the UN Security Council.” With a view to the upcoming NATO summit in Madrid, Landsbergis speaks of “difficult talks” with Lithuania’s NATO partners, including Germany.

Lithuania wants more Bundeswehr soldiers in the country

As a deterrent to Russia, Lithuania would like to see the German NATO troop contingent on its soil increased from a good 1,000 to 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers. But Berlin wants to keep a large part of the additional Bundeswehr troops in Germany on standby and only send them to the Baltic States if necessary. Landsbergis is not enough. Lithuania couldn’t do much with the promise “We’ll come if you need us”. “What if you’re just a little bit late?”
