Ukraine is on EU course. Following the support of Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, the EU Commission also recommended officially granting Ukraine candidate status. If the heads of government of the 27 member states agree at the summit meeting, that would only be the first step on a long road – read here which hurdles Ukraine still has to overcome. In addition, there are still many arguments against the candidate fulfilling the necessary requirements for full membership.
Accession status, however, in no way guarantees admission to the international community. Seven nations are currently waiting to become part of the union – and have been for years. They can sing a song about the fact that there is no fixed schedule associated with submitting the application.
