The committee of inquiry into the attack on the US Capitol in January last year is today focusing on attempts by then President Donald Trump to influence the Department of Justice.
Former Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue are expected to attend a hearing. Both only took office in December 2020 for the final weeks of Trump’s tenure, after Attorney General William Barr tendered his resignation amid a dispute over the outcome of the presidential election.
To this day, Trump claims without evidence that he was deprived of victory in the November 2020 election through fraud. His camp failed with dozens of lawsuits. Trump also pressured the Justice Department to investigate his fraud allegations. For weeks, the Republican tried to overturn the success of Democrat Joe Biden using the most questionable methods. Opposition to the outcome of the election culminated in an attack on the Capitol, the seat of Parliament.
The investigative committee questioned Barr in addition to hundreds of other witnesses and has repeatedly shown recordings of his testimony in previous hearings. Barr described Trump’s fraudulent fantasies as “bullshit” and “crazy”. He seems to have increasingly “lost touch with reality”. Video recordings of a survey have already been shown by Donoghue. Accordingly, he told the then President several times that there was nothing to the allegations.
On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters violently stormed the seat of parliament in the capital Washington. Congress met there to certify Biden’s election victory. Five people died during the riots, including a police officer. Trump had recently incited his supporters at a rally.
