“We have to deport as long as we can”, Nehammer confirmed in the “Kleine Zeitung” that they want to continue to organize deportation flights “in cooperation with Afghanistan”. However, there have been no such flights since mid-June.
The office of Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) referred to this fact again yesterday. Deportation flights are “factually and legally not possible in the foreseeable future”. FP boss Herbert Kickl therefore accused the interior minister of “selling the Austrians for stupid”.
Video conference in Vienna
Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (VP) and Nehammer announced a virtual Afghanistan conference for the end of August or the beginning of September. They want to consult with the Central Asian neighbors of the crisis country and some EU countries about targeted help on site. They want to support the neighboring states, but also “take consistent action against those who abuse this aid,” said Nehammer. Together with Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece, Nehammer already urged an aid program in a letter to the EU Commission at the beginning of July, but also announced that he would stick to the deportations. Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands have now revised the latter.
