Many Afghans had recently feared that when the Taliban returned to power, they would again enforce a very strict interpretation of Islamic law. A Taliban spokesman told Al Jazeera that it wanted relations with the international community. He added that the Taliban respected the rights of women and minorities and freedom of expression when they were in accordance with Sharia law.
