Record flyer: Over 800 people evacuated from Afghanistan in a plane

The hectic and drama in Afghanistan has intensified drastically in the last few hours. More and more people are trying to escape the Taliban dictatorship. A single plane is now said to have brought 800 people out of the country at once.

They are robust, huge and can transport large quantities of air cargo: Boeing’s C-17 cargo jets have been part of the inventory of the US Air Force for decades. In Afghanistan, they are currently used to bring people to safety – and show how great the need is for this at the moment.

The "normal cargo" of a C-17: In March 2012, around 160 US soldiers will be flown out of Kyrgyzstan.

Normally, C-17 cargo jets are used to transport paratroopers, among other things. One of the planes then transported fewer than 150 soldiers. In times of crisis, significantly more people are transported with it. Among other things, more than 670 residents were rescued from the country during the typhoon in the Philippines.
