In the capital Quito, confrontations between demonstrators and the police intensified. Among other things, the indigenous groups are demanding respect for their right to self-determination.
On the twelfth day of sometimes violent protests against social grievances in Ecuador, President Guillermo Lasso accused indigenous groups of attempting a coup.
“Mr. Iza’s real intention is to overthrow the government,” Lasso said in a video speech about the head of the indigenous association Conaie, Leonidas Iza. “The National Police and the Armed Forces will take the necessary means to defend public order and democracy, within the legal framework, through the gradual use of force.”
Indigenous groups have been protesting in the South American country since June 13, blocking numerous roads. Among other things, they demand a freeze on fuel prices, a moratorium on debt service for more than four million families, fair prices for agricultural products and respect for the right of indigenous peoples to self-determination.
There were also clashes with security forces. The Conaie accused them of excessive violence. Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo confirmed four deaths. According to the police, 169 police officers were injured and 121 people arrested during the protests by Friday morning (local time). 55 police vehicles were damaged and 11 destroyed.
There were renewed clashes in the capital Quito on Friday, in which tear gas was used. According to a tweet from the Conaie, there were injuries. According to the authorities, a military convoy had been attacked the night before.
