STORY: Tens of thousands of citizens have taken to the streets across the United States to vent their anger over the Supreme Court’s abortion rights decision. The protesters chanted slogans, carried placards and occupied streets across the US. In New York alone, at least ten thousand demonstrators packed Washington Square Park to protest the ban. The Supreme Court had previously overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, which recognized a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion. In Los Angeles, protesters blocked traffic on a freeway. In some cases there were clashes with vehicles. Similar demonstrations also took place in Boston and Seattle. People also demonstrated against the decision in front of the Supreme Court itself. The mobilizing indignation about the step could go far – up to the congressional elections in November. The decision is also likely to fuel debate over the legitimacy of the court, which was once an unassailable cornerstone of the American system but is increasingly being called into question because of several conservative decisions.
