In the midst of a tangible economic crisis, Africa’s former model democracy has elected a new parliament and a new president.
The landlocked country of Zambia, located in southern Africa, is getting a new president. Opposition candidate Hakainde Hichilema was declared the winner of the presidential election by the election commission on Monday night.
Accordingly, Hichilema was able to secure 2,810,757 votes and is thus well ahead of the incumbent President Edgar Lungu, for whom 1,824,201 voters voted. In the capital, Lusaka, people celebrated Hichilema’s election victory, who had previously run for office five times.
Followers of Hichilema danced for joy on the streets of Lusaka, horn concerts and fireworks could also be heard. Hichilema himself thanked the voters on Twitter. The election in Africa’s former model democracy with its rich copper deposits took place in the midst of a tangible economic crisis, political tensions and strict corona restrictions.
