The situation in Afghanistan is noticeably worsening. In particular, concern for women, local workers and employees of non-governmental organizations has increased enormously since the Taliban took over. An application by the Greens parliamentary group in June was supposed to protect these people, but was rejected by the CDU / CSU, SPD, FDP and AfD. One MP now describes this as a mistake.
As early as June 23, the parliamentary group of the Greens applied for a group procedure to be introduced for the “generous admission of Afghan local staff who work or have worked for German organizations”. The request indicated that “local staff […] are often seen by the Taliban as collaborators and traitors “and are therefore” exposed to persecution in many cases “.
The procedure in which a local employee has to prove their individual risk situation is “still based on individual cases” and “poses too high bureaucratic hurdles”. Despite this assessment, this motion only received the approval of the parliamentary groups of the Greens and the Left, all other parties voted against or abstained.
CDU MP on Afghanistan vote: “Big and serious mistake”
With Roderich Kiesewetter, a first member of the Bundestag has now described this vote as a mistake. The CDU MP wrote on Twitter: “It was a big and serious mistake to reject the Greens’ motion – on principle – period.” It is the first time a CDU member has spoken on the Greens’ motion, which is now heavily discussed. Kiesewetter deals, among other things, with questions of internal and external security.
