The actual conference venue is hermetically sealed off. But at least in the region, the critics of the G7 summit want to be visible. They are planning a demo in nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Critics of the G7 summit now want to express their protest at the start of the meeting at Schloss Elmau in nearby Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A demonstration through the tranquil little town at the foot of the Zugspitze is planned for today.
After the opening rally at the station forecourt with speeches and music, the organizers want to lead the train over a 3.3-kilometer route, including through the pedestrian zone. The final rally is then planned between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Despite good weather, only a few thousand demonstrators
The district office expects about 1000 participants. How difficult it is to make predictions, however, had only been shown the day before in Munich: Instead of the crowds expected by the organizers and the police – “at least 20,000, in good weather also significantly more” – only a few thousand people came to the central protest event in the state capital in the best sunshine . A broad alliance of 15 globalization-critical associations from Attac to the environmental organization WWF had called for the demo.
As in Munich, the organizers of the demonstration in Garmisch-Partenkirchen want to focus on several topics. Among them is climate justice, a globally just economy, agriculture and food sovereignty and “peace logic instead of war logic”.
Second time at Schloss Elmau
This means that there are – albeit certainly from a different perspective – a large number of overlaps in content with the meeting of the heads of state and government of the seven leading Western industrialized countries with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) from June 26th to 28th in the luxury hotel a few kilometers away Schloss Elmau has invited. There, the global economic situation, climate protection and foreign and security policy will also be discussed today – in particular sanctions against Russia. On the fringes of the summit there will also be one-on-one talks between the leaders.
It is the second time that the high-level meeting is taking place at Schloss Elmau. As in 2015, around 18,000 police forces are in the region to guarantee the security of the heads of state and government from Germany, the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy and Japan. According to the assessment of the emergency services, the demonstration in Garmisch-Partenkirchen will lead to some far-reaching restrictions in road traffic. At the same time, national traffic is already being diverted over a wide area.
