War of aggression in Ukraine: Air defense: USA want to deliver weapon system to Ukraine

Ukrainian officials have asked for weapon systems capable of hitting targets more than 100 miles (about 160 kilometers) away. The USA is now putting together a package.

The US government wants to supply Ukraine with a modern weapon system for air defense. “I can confirm that we are indeed in the process of finalizing a package that includes advanced air defense capabilities,” said US President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, on Monday on the sidelines of the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked for “additional air defense capacity” in view of Russian rocket attacks on Kyiv and other cities.

Sullivan declined to give details. The broadcaster CNN reported that it was a surface-to-air missile defense system from the arms corporations Kongsberg (Norway) and Raytheon (USA) called Nasams. The US was due to announce later this week that it had bought the system for Ukraine, the CNN report said. Ukrainian government officials asked for the weapon because it could hit targets more than 100 miles (about 160 kilometers) away. The US would likely announce additional military support this week, including additional artillery ammunition and radar equipment.

Russia reacts cautiously

The Kremlin in Moscow reacted cautiously to the CNN report. There is still no communication from the United States, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, according to the Interfax news agency. Russia constantly takes measures to protect its interests.

US President Biden is currently at the G7 summit in Bavaria on Monday morning, where Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine was discussed. Only last Thursday, the United States announced further arms deliveries to Ukraine in the amount of 450 million dollars (about 428 million euros). Since the start of the war four months ago, the US government has said it has pledged or already delivered weapons and equipment worth around 6.1 billion US dollars (5.8 billion euros) to Ukraine.
