Russian oligarchs: They fear sanctions and their wives

The luxury yacht of an oligarch is to be auctioned for the first time. In addition to the economic sanctions, the billionaires suffer above all from their wives, as the sociologist Elisabeth Schimpfössl reports from the living rooms of the super-rich.

The vast majority of oligarchs are still loyal to Putin because they mainly earn their money in Russia. Anyone who wants to continue doing this shouldn’t mess with the Kremlin. Especially now: because McDonalds, Starbucks and many other corporations have left Russia, which means there is new potential, as Elisabeth Schimpfössl says in the 305th edition of the podcast “important today”: “Economists estimate that it is 500 billion dollars , which have practically become free. These are market areas that can be redistributed. That means Putin has some leeway in thanking those loyal oligarchs by handing them these areas.”

The double game of the oligarchs

At the same time, many of these super-rich want to circumvent the sanctions: “Most will certainly try to stay in the game and they will try to do so by playing a certain double game. In other words, by presenting themselves as innocent in the West, but at the same time dancing around the Kremlin,” says sociologist Elisabeth Schimpfössl.

She has been observing oligarchs in Russia for a long time and for her book Rich Russians: From Oligarchs to Bourgeoisie she spoke to 80 super-rich in Great Britain to understand their views and values.

Annoyed by their wives

Now that many yachts are impounded, sanctions are in effect and many are worried about their fortunes, their wives, daughters and affairs in particular would drive the “oil men” insane. “In the past, if you were getting on your nerves, you could send the woman on a yacht and let her swim in the Mediterranean for a few weeks, and now the pesky cow at home is really annoying,” Elisabeth Schimpfössel quotes an insider as saying. who knows the oligarchs well.
