Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) has announced that Germany will play a “large part” in strengthening NATO. What will come out in the end will be known after the upcoming NATO summit, Scholz said on Tuesday after the end of the three-day G7 summit at Schloss Elmau in Bavaria on ARD.
“But everyone can already know one thing: Everything that we have to contribute with our large share, we will also contribute with our large share.” And this is about the operational capability of the alliance as a whole, he emphasized.
“We will spend an average of around 70 to 80 billion euros per year on defense over the next few years,” said Scholz. “And then Germany is the country that invests the most in this.”
Special assets for the Bundeswehr
Scholz referred to the special fund for the Bundeswehr in the amount of 100 billion euros – the Bundestag and the Bundesrat followed his proposal here.
