Schleswig-Holstein: Minister of Social Affairs Touré: “Biography does not replace politics”

Her parents, who fled Mali, told Aminata Touré that she had to “always give 200 percent”. Now she is the first Afro-German minister – and very aware of her responsibility.

The first Afro-German minister in a federal state, the future Schleswig-Holstein social affairs minister Aminata Touré, sees a great opportunity in her new position.

“Of course it’s a special role. I’m already getting a lot of messages from people who write to me that it means a lot to them,” said the 29-year-old Green politician to the editorial network Germany (RND) and the “Kieler Nachrichten”. “It is important to deal with it responsibly.”

Touré was born in Neumünster in 1992, her parents fled from Mali. She has been a member of the Kiel state parliament since 2017 and has been its vice president since 2019. On Wednesday, the first black-green state government in Schleswig-Holstein will be sworn in under the leadership of Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU).

Touré emphasized that her parents had made it clear to her that, as a member of a minority in Germany, she “always had to give 200 percent” where others only gave 100 percent. “But at the end of the day, I wish for a society where there is no need to always give twice as much just because you’re different in some way.”

It is important that politics is also made by people who know from their own experience the perspective of those who have so far been little represented in society. But that alone is not enough, emphasized Touré. «Biography does not replace politics. It is necessary to deal with the people who now have this challenge and to have political concepts. The combination of everything makes politics.”
