Diplomacy: Indonesia’s Widodo arrives in Kyiv for peacekeeping mission

In November, Indonesia will host the G20 summit, which Russian President Putin also plans to attend. Indonesia’s President Widodo goes on a peace mission.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo arrived in Kyiv on Wednesday morning in his largely self-proclaimed role as peace mediator between Russia and Ukraine.

At the train station in the Ukrainian capital, he and his entourage were received by Deputy Foreign Minister Dmytro Senik, among others, according to the Indonesian Presidential Office in Jakarta. A meeting with the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was planned for the afternoon. Widodo had previously said he would appeal to Zelenskyy to agree to peace talks.

Onward journey to Moscow

On Thursday, Widodo plans to travel to Russia to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and urge him to end the war to avert a global food crisis. On February 24, Russia launched a war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine.

Indonesia will host the G20 summit on the holiday island of Bali in November. Widodo had also invited Putin, and the Kremlin has now confirmed his participation – it remains unclear whether in person or via video link.

Widodo flew to Poland on Tuesday evening after attending the G7 summit in the Bavarian Alps, from where he continued by train to Kyiv in the evening, as he wrote on Twitter. «From platform 4 of the Przemysl train station in the Polish town of Przemysl, I took a train to Kyiv, Ukraine, with a small entourage at nine o’clock in the evening. We started this peacekeeping mission with good intentions. I hope things get easier,” tweeted Joko.
