Afghanistan: “They will kill me”: ex-informant reports from Kabul (video)

You can see in the video: “If they find me, they will kill me” – a former helper of the Germans reports from hiding in Kabul.

The interview in text form:
Interviewer: Where are you and what is the current situation in Kabul?
Karim: You know, we live in the seventh district in Kabul and you know about the situation in the city. It has now been two days since the capital fell to the Taliban. The security situation is not good.
Please describe briefly how you are doing? What are you currently most afraid of?
Because I worked for GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) from 2011 to the end of 2017, I feel bad now. I’ve been hiding with a friend for two days. I can’t go out anymore.
What would actually happen if the Taliban discovered you? Or knock on your door one day?
Because of my work for the German GIZ, the situation is dangerous. The Taliban have hunted me before. If they find me now, they will kill me or throw me in jail.
You worked for the Germans. What were your tasks?
I worked as an on-site assistant for the Germans from 2011 to the end of 2017. My job was to get security-related information about the environment. I passed this on to my colleagues in the GIZ office. After the Taliban attempted the attack on me, GIZ no longer supported me and left me without trust.
What exactly do you want from the German state?
I demand that the German government and those responsible at my old employer support me – after seven years in their service. I protected their lives. If they don’t help me and the Taliban find me, they will kill.
Do you still have hope of leaving the country soon?
I have no way of leaving the country. If I take to the streets and the Taliban find me, they won’t let me live because of my past. I can’t get out and I have no prospect of leaving Afghanistan.
When the Taliban came to Kabul, what did you get out of it? What did you observe?
When the Taliban advanced into Kabul, I didn’t see them. I was already hiding at the time. But from the people I have contact with, I know that the Taliban police officers – including women police – killed on the street. They keep killing innocent people.
You worked as an informant for the Germans for many years. Now you are sitting in Kabul and are scared to death. How big is your disappointment, your anger?
I worked honestly and with integrity for the GIZ office for seven years. They are responsible for our survival, but they have failed us. Now I am calling for quick help from the federal government for myself and my family. If they don’t help us now, bad things will happen to us.
What is your hope for Afghanistan, for this broken country?
With the Taliban coming to power, we no longer have any hope for the future. It’s still the old Taliban. You haven’t changed. They don’t care about human rights or humanity. You shouldn’t have control over people. That is why we have no hope for Afghanistan’s future. And one last thing: please don’t show our face.
