The flood disaster hit regions in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate particularly hard. Rebuilding will cost a lot of money.
The federal government has launched the multi-billion dollar state fund for the victims of the flood disaster.
A total of around 30 billion euros is to be paid out for the reconstruction of houses, companies, roads, bridges and railways. 16 billion of this should flow this year, as the cabinet decided on Wednesday. The coalition factions of the Union and the SPD should now bring a corresponding draft into the Bundestag.
According to the draft, construction aid for private households and companies will be provided “as long as the damage is not covered by insurance or other third parties”. Homeowners damaged by the flood are to be reimbursed 80 percent of the costs that would be necessary to restore their destroyed buildings – in cases of hardship, all costs should also be covered.
The federal government and the federal states jointly participate in the fund; the federal government alone bears the costs of restoring the federal infrastructure in the amount of two billion euros.
