STORY: After weeks of fighting, Russian troops say they have conquered the eastern Ukrainian bastion of Lysychansk and thus taken control of the entire Luhansk region. According to the Defense Ministry, Russian soldiers and pro-Russian separatists initially managed to encircle Lysychansk and then “penetrate the city to completely defeat the enemy there. When and where these pictures were taken cannot be verified. The conquest of Luhansk and most recently Lysychansk in particular was one of Russia’s most important war targets. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy admits that his country’s armed forces had withdrawn from the city. Further defense would have had fatal consequences. However, in his late-night video message he promised to take control over the area, using army tactics and new, improved weapons.
