It is only a matter of time before the consumption of cannabis becomes legal in Germany. The chancellor said so, as did the health minister. But it shouldn’t be more “Bubatz” than before, says Karl Lauterbach.
Consuming cannabis should become legal in Germany. But one thing should definitely not happen: an increase in consumption. Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach emphasized this. Preparations were in full swing, the SPD politician wrote on Twitter on Monday. “The “Bubatz consumption” should become legal and safer, but not increase.” For children and young people, the risks greatly outweigh the risks. There it stays with the ban. “For adults, safe consumption is well justifiable.”
Lauterbach was reacting to a statement by Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) in the ARD summer interview on Sunday. A viewer question that was read out there was: “Mr. Scholz, when will Bubatz be legal?” The Chancellor initially responded with a “Hm?” After repeating the question, he answered with a smirk that preparations for cannabis legalization were now underway. That will come in this legislative period, the exact date has not yet been set.
Legal “Bubatz” consumption will come
“Bubatz” is a slang term for a “joint” used primarily in the hip-hop scene. Bubatz is also an alternative name for “grass” or “weed”. The Ampel parties had agreed in the coalition agreement to introduce a “controlled sale of cannabis to adults for recreational purposes in licensed shops”. A bill is expected to be presented by the end of the year.
