Afghan local workers are threatened by the Taliban because of their support for the Bundeswehr and German organizations. Nevertheless, their departure often fails – due to bureaucratic hurdles in Germany. How can that be?
The evacuations of Afghan local staff from Kabul are ongoing, but many former helpers of the German government are still being refused entry to Germany. In the podcast “important today” tells a woman about her unsuccessful attempt to save her father-in-law from Afghanistan – a former helper of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
Taliban don’t care about deadlines
Because the man has not worked for GIZ since 2017, he is not entitled to board one of the planes, says his daughter-in-law Lorena, who does not want to give her last name. “A terrorist organization like the Taliban doesn’t care what deadlines we get here in Germany from some employers”says Lorena. “As soon as a Taliban fighter discovers him, he will be killed.”
Deadly bureaucracy
In an interview with moderator Michel Abdollahi, Green MEP Erik Marquardt sees a German bureaucracy problem in dealing with Afghan local staff. “The German bureaucracy kills people with its actions”, he says. Marquardt also calls on the federal government to support private initiatives and aid organizations in rescue operations. “One cannot act so bureaucratically and according to regulations in a crisis situation”says Marquardt.
