Dizziness, headache, fatigue: According to media reports, several US diplomats in Germany are affected by the puzzling “Havana Syndrome”. Its trigger is still unclear.
According to media reports, at least two US diplomats in Germany have reported health problems that indicate the so-called Havana Syndrome. This is what the “Spiegel” and the “Wall Street Journal” report. The “” refers to unnamed US diplomats and named symptoms such as dizziness, severe headache, earache, fatigue, insomnia and sluggishness. Havana Syndrome is the name given to the mysterious illnesses of American diplomats, which were first reported years ago in the Cuban capital and which still raise questions today.
There was initially no official confirmation for the cases in Germany. In response to a question in Washington on Wednesday, State Department spokesman Ned Price said that the department generally does not comment on individual cases of this kind. He stressed, however, that cases of mysterious health complaints by US diplomats are a priority for Secretary of State Antony Flash. There is nothing the ministry takes more seriously than the health of its employees. The Foreign Office and other parts of the US government are working intensively to get to the bottom of the cause and to support and care for affected employees.
The cause of the symptoms remains unexplained
Dozens of diplomats living in Havana and their relatives had complained of puzzling headaches, hearing loss, dizziness and nausea from 2016. The embassy staff was then reduced to a minimum. Similar complaints were later reported in other parts of the world. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki recently said it was unknown whether these incidents were some kind of attack or what was behind it.
In 2019, researchers wrote that the complaints may be related to pesticides. Other theories spoke of microwave radiation from enemy secret services or of acoustic attacks. The exact cause of the health problems remains unclear.
The New Yorker magazine reported in July that around two dozen US intelligence officials, diplomats and other government officials in Vienna reported mysterious complaints that resembled those of the Havana Syndrome.
