The mayor of Oeiras, Ysaltino Morais, this Monday dismissed Block de Esquerda’s criticism of a housing project in an ecological reserve in Caxias Norte, calling Catarina Martins a “leader of the far left” who is unaware of the reality of the municipality.
In a statement entitled “Radicals are destroying Portugal”, Isaltino Morais reacted to a visit this morning to Caxias Norte by Block de Esquerda (BE) coordinator Catarina Martins and independent councilor Carla Castelo, during which they accused the municipality of approving a project for the construction of 16 buildings on an area of 3.4 hectares, classified as a National Ecological Reserve (REN).
According to Isaltino Morais, the project in question is “under approval” and is being promoted “by a consortium of Teixeira Duarte and China Construction Company on land in an old quarry in Caxias, Pedreira das Perdigeiras”, without any reference. to critical remarks that relate to the environmental aspect of the enterprise.
Mayor Oeiras says the proposed investment is “more than 300 million euros” and should “create more than 2,000 jobs.”
“If the enterprise is successful, it is likely that there will be room for wealth creation, jobs and profits – all false concepts for radicals that are positive for mere mortals,” the statement said.
In this memo, the mayor emphasizes that “without wealth creation, wages in Portugal do not grow”, “without work, the country does not develop”, and “without the prospect of profit, there is no private investment”, again criticizing the Bloc of the Left. say that “work for the radicals is not a very common thing.”
“We understand that the leader of this radical far left party does not appreciate the quality of life and good performance of Oeiras, we have long defended a free, inclusive and prosperous society, probably very far from the Albania that the radicals from the Bloc of the Left dreamed of,” the mayor writes .
Speaking directly to Katarina Martins, Isaltino Morais says that “very likely” the BE coordinator “will not know the reality of Oeiras” where “there is no fertile ground to sell their snake oil offerings that have been shared with the Portuguese and postponed by Portugal”.
“Oeiras, at its short 46 square kilometers and with a population of just 1.7% of the country, represents 13% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and has the best development record in Portugal!” the statement said.
During a visit this morning to Paço de Arcos in Oeiras as part of the “Climate Justice Roadmap” organized by Block de Esquerda, Catarina Martins felt that the situation observed in the lands of Caxias Norte is “a good example of what needs to happen “. .
According to the block coordinator, the construction in Caxias Norte, in the REN zone, “will create more problems for the population of Oeiras, with more waterproofed land, with more problems with droughts and floods”, but “will give millions” to the construction. the Teixeira Duarte company “to everyone who has land here and is going to build it.”
“We have already realized that [o presidente da Câmara Municipal de Oeiras] Isaltino Morais is very fond of the million euro business with construction companies and private landowners, as well as the administrative change in land use. And the government, is that also what it will allow? Will the Environment Department stand still when it sees National Ecological Preserve (REW) land being used for real estate business? That’s the question,” he said.
On her side, Councilor Carla Castelo accused the current municipal leader of “a complete lack of concern for climate change” and “jokingly speaking in a jocular tone towards those who care about this issue.”
“We are doing what is a very old model here – 80s, 90s – based largely on real estate speculation and enriching those who have land in the REN zone or the National Agricultural Reserve (RAN) and, From moment to moment, he has urban land that is worth much more,” he stressed, following Katarina Martins.
