President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, swimming this Saturday and walking along the sandy beach of Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, relaxed and said that “in Brazil there is never a problem.”
The presence of the Portuguese head of state in Copacabana on a winter morning in Brazil surprised people who were in that part of the beach. Some approached and asked to be photographed.
“I wish Brazil had such a president,” said Andreea, a Carioca who married a Portuguese who then went to call her Porto-born husband Vitor to take a “selfie” with Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
The President of the Republic dived with Minister of Culture Pedro Adao and Silva into the waters of Copacabana, where they swam for about fifteen minutes, accompanied by two guards.
Coming out of the sea, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa walked a little more and lingered in conversation with two young women lying on the sand.
A street vendor, watching from afar, exclaimed, “Who doesn’t like Copacabana, that beautiful, wonderful, famous beach that even has the president here?”
If he were the president of Brazil, he added, “there would be security here and you wouldn’t be here.”
On the seashore in swimming trunks, the head of state called his diving friend, the Minister of Culture, “an expert, an excellent surfer.” Pedro Adao i Silva stated that he had “better days”.
Addressing reporters, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza asked: “They don’t want to dive, do they? That’s why they stay outside. The shots from inside were amazing. To do this, they had to bring equipment.”
The Minister of Culture, who oversees the media, warned: “Public services were expensive.”
In this regard, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza was once again asked about the “problem” that arose on this trip: the possible cancellation by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro of an invitation he had made to a meeting, followed by lunch in Brasilia on Monday, the fair.
“But what’s the problem? I just don’t see problems. In Brazil there is never a problem, that’s what I learned. My grandfather came here at the end of the 19th century. I learned that in Brazil what looks like a problem is actually It’s not really a problem, it just seems,” the President retorted.
Pedro Adao e Silva noted that the sea is “good for a career.”
When asked if he was ready for all the waves, the President of the Republic replied: “I don’t see any waves. I don’t see more than these.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in Rio de Janeiro this morning for a commemorative session on the aerial crossing of the South Atlantic made a hundred years ago by Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho, in the port area in the city center.
After that, his program includes a reception for the Portuguese community at the Consulate General of Portugal in Botafogo.
