Brandenburg: Why there is a hangover on the ballot paper in the federal election

In a constituency in Brandenburg, the party “Bobby” is up for election – that is the name of the candidate’s cat. The choice of name was neither intentional nor a joke, but a misunderstanding.

If you find out about the candidates in constituency 62 in Brandenburg before the federal election, you will come across a few more or less well-known names. Member of the Bundestag Jana Schimke, who was able to win this constituency in the previous elections and can be seen on talk shows from time to time, is running for the CDU. On closer inspection, however, an unusual name becomes apparent: The “Bobby” party, which is available for election in the constituency “Dahme-Spreewald – Teltow-Fläming III – Oberspreewald-Lausitz I”.

Even more unusual: Bobby is a hangover. Namely Michael Gabler’s hangover, as reported by the RBB. Michael Gabler is the candidate who is applying for entry into the Bundestag – and that the name of his cat landed on the ballot paper is actually a misunderstanding. Because actually there is no Bobby party, Gabler is not even a member of any party.

The cat Bobby is accidentally on the ballot paper

According to the ballot, he works as a zoo keeper and was born in Treuenbrietzen in 1972. Gabler wanted to get involved politically and is therefore running as a direct candidate. As such, he should give a so-called password to the election officer instead of a party name, which gives an indication of his political agenda. His competitor Volker Commentz, for example, chose the slogan “Defend Democracy”.

But Gabler had misunderstood something: he said it was a password that he needed on the phone to identify himself. So the cat’s name landed on the ballot paper – and brings the non-party candidate some attention. Gabler should still not have realistic chances of a place in the German Bundestag. In any case, the pet owner has a completely different problem, especially in the hot phase of the election campaign: Bobby ran away two weeks ago and has not yet reappeared.
