A school embarked on a creative path after Republican governor Greg Abbott ruled that masking requirements were illegal in his state of Texas. At the Paris Independent School District north-east of the metropolis of Dallas that the masks are now part of the school uniforms. “The management believes that the school uniform can be used to minimize health risks and has revised the guidelines to protect students and employees,” the school writes on its website.
In the statement, the school also pointed out that the governor was not authorized to rule on the regulations of public schools and relied on those of the state of Texas. The measures would be revised monthly, but initially apply from the start of school today after the summer holidays.
A particularly high number of cases reported from Republican-ruled states
The US health authority CDC had already recommended the masks for kindergarten children and students up to the twelfth grade last month. This recommendation also applies to prepared vaccinated children.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott had repeatedly opposed tougher control measures in the past. On Tuesday, Abbott tested positive for the coronavirus despite being fully vaccinated. Every third corona infection in the USA is currently reported from the two states of Texas and Florida. Texas is struggling with a particularly large number of corona cases because of the contagious Delta variant.
