After the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan, former US National Security Advisor John Bolton, warned of a Taliban grab for nuclear weapons. “New nuclear risks loom in Afghanistan, not tomorrow or in 30 days, but in the medium term,” Bolton told the newspapers of the editorial network Germany (RND, Thursday editions). He referred to Afghanistan’s neighbors Pakistan and Iran, both of which have nuclear programs.
“Afghanistan was never just about Afghanistan,” Bolton told the newspapers. The US presence in the country has always served to collect information from the two “problematic neighboring countries” with nuclear programs. “Our ability to screen the region is now reduced by the withdrawal.”
Taliban have been interested in nuclear weapons before
The US government had known since 2001 that the Taliban were also interested in nuclear weapons. “Please don’t be naive now,” demanded Bolton. “They didn’t go into hiding for 20 years and now say: Okay, now is a good time to give up our principles.”
The former security advisor sharply criticized US President Joe Biden. “The turmoil in Kabul damaged his reputation as a particularly committed and accomplished president in terms of foreign policy,” he told the RND. The President had just spoken of an alliance of all people to whom freedom is important. “And then he pushes the Afghans under the bus.”
Bolton was against Trump’s Afghanistan plans
Bolton was security advisor to former US President Donald Trump until his resignation in September 2019. One of the reasons for his resignation was a dispute over Afghanistan: Trump was for, Bolton against the withdrawal of US troops. The now 72-year-old also served as a foreign policy expert for former US Presidents Ronald Reagan, George Bush and George W. Bush.
