It was one of the most shocking scenes from Afghanistan: people wanted to get out of the country on the first evacuation flight at any cost, they even tried to hold on to the extended landing gear. One of the people who fell in the process was a junior international.
Zaki Anwari would have had his whole life ahead of her. Obviously, he did not want to spend it under the rule of the Taliban. However, he did not survive his plan to escape from Kabul on the landing gear of a C-17 cargo jet, as the General Directorate for Sport announced.
Afghanistan: people try to escape on airplane landing gear
The scenes from the airport in Kabul can hardly be forgotten. Hundreds, thousands of people were standing there, besieging the airport, waiting for the flight to save them. The first US flight from Kabul was hopelessly overloaded with over 600 passengers, and yet people tried to escape the country at all costs.
Among the people who clung to the undercarriage of the C-17 and lost their footing at great heights was Zaki Anwari, a young national soccer player. Anwari apparently tried to climb onto one of the C-17 planes that the US military uses as a troop and transport plane. A desperate and hopeless undertaking, because of course the chassis does not offer any real support. The Afghan sports ministry has now also confirmed the young athlete’s death. Zaki Anwari died “in a bad accident” when he fell while trying to escape.

Like Anwari, other people tried to hold onto the outside wall of the aircraft while they were already overcrowded. Local media are now reporting that several bodies have been found east of the airport.
