The President of the Republic this Wednesday awarded the Public Security Police with the Military Order of the Tower and Sword, Valor, Loyalty and Merit, the most significant Portuguese award.
“I place on your national standard the insignia of an honorary member of the Military Order of the Tower and the Sword of Valor, Loyalty and Merit. Thus fulfilling the commitment I made when awarding the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the Navy, the Army and the Air Force with the same name as the most important Portuguese award,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.
The award ceremony took place during the PSP 155th Anniversary Ceremony presided over by the President of the Republic.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa stated that the title represented “an honorary promotion for the PSP, which has since 1935 held the degree of a great official of the same order”, being an award “now awarded not under a dictatorship, but under a democracy”.
“A title that thanks you for all your history, but in particular for your dedication during the very critical years of the pandemic, but always for your presence, your work, your availability, your dedication, your humanity, your courageous service to the Portuguese.” said .
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also said that the decoration symbolizes the “gratitude and trust” of the President of the Republic and the Portuguese.
During the ceremony, which was also attended by the Minister of the Interior, José Luis Carneiro, the memory of the policemen who died as a result of police actions was memorialized, and the officers whose devotion to the cause of society deserves public recognition were awarded the Public Safety Award.
PSP agent Fabio Guerra, who was killed on March 21 at the door of a nightclub in Lisbon, was awarded posthumously, and the family received a corresponding award.
